NBI & NGF have officially committed to supporting and complying with the principles of the Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights, which was created in 2021 on the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Institute of European Traffic Law (IETL) and the Council of Bureaux (COB). The Charter defines standards for European liability and compensation rules and serves as an ethical code of conduct for the handling of national and international claims. It contains ten basic principles that aim to convey an ethos of care and clarity to the victims of road traffic accidents.
Both the NBI & NGF associations have long been associated with the Charter. Their former president Martin Metzler was an early supporter of the Charter project. He was instrumental in drafting the text of the Charter. Daniel Wernli, current President of NBI & NGF, was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Charter website, supported the awareness campaign and continues to promote the importance and dissemination of the Charter in his roles as Vice President of the COB and as Vice President of the Institute of European Traffic Law (IETL).
Commenting on the decision to officially support the Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights, the President of the two associations said: "We strongly support the Charter and are convinced that it will help to continuously improve the handling of claims in the interests of road traffic victims. We believe that the principles set out in the Charter are essential. As these principles are recognized across Europe, they will improve standards everywhere, including in countries and regions where they were already high and in markets where the motor third party liability insurance industry is experiencing strong growth." "Although the Charter is not binding law," Daniel Wernli continues, "we are convinced that it will help to strengthen the rights of road traffic victims. We invite all entities involved in the handling of motor vehicle liability claims, including insurers, loss adjusters, green card bureaux and guarantee funds, to join us and the previous supporters."
