The contributions for financing the National Bureau of Insurance (NBI) and the National Guarantee Fund (NGF) will be adjusted from 1.1.2026. The annual contributions for motorcycles will be reduced to CHF 1.40, while those for heavy motor vehicles will increase to CHF 12.60. The contributions for light motor vehicles will remain unchanged at CHF 4.20. The contributions are levied per vehicle and year.
The changes were necessary because the claims expenditure for motorcycles has decreased and that for heavy motor vehicles has increased. The adjustment therefore takes into account the actual claims development in the respective vehicle categories. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA and the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein have approved the new contributions from 2026.
Contributions per year (as of 1.1.2026) | NBI | NGF | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Motorcycles | CHF 0.10 | CHF 1.30 | CHF 1.40 |
Motor vehicles up to 3.5 tons | CHF 0.30 | CHF 3.90 | CHF 4.20 |
Heavy motor vehicles | CHF 0.90 | CHF 11.70 | CHF 12.60 |
The contributions are levied by the motor vehicle liability insurers together with the insurance premium. This is a legally prescribed levy, the amount and collection of which the individual insurance companies have no influence on.
The levy is a special-purpose tax, as it serves to finance specific tasks of the NBI and NGF. It is based on the Road Traffic Act (SVG) and the Traffic Insurance Ordinance (VVV). The contributions are calculated according to recognized actuarial rules and are subject to approval by FINMA (Art. 76a SVG, Art. 58 VVV). The insurance companies are obliged to inform the policyholders about the amount of the premiums and to forward the relevant information to the competent authorities for the correct collection of premiums (Art. 59 VVV).
